Staten Island lost to the Tri-City ValleyCats (Houston Astros) 4-0 on August 27th. Ernst pitched 2 shutout innings and faced 9 batters. Nick has 32 strikeouts in the 30 innings pitched with the Staten Island Yankees.

Staten Island shut out the Aberdeen IronBirds (Baltimore Orioles) 1-0 on August 24th. Nick retired the 3 batters he faced in the season series finale between the squads.

Staten Island lost to the Vermont Lake Monsters (Oakland A’s) 4-3 on August 5th. Nick was charged with the loss with a 2-run 7th inning.

Staten Island lost to the Brooklyn Cyclones (New York Mets) 11-4 on August 11th. Ernst struck out 3 of the 11 batters he faced.

Staten Island lost on the road to the West Virginia Black Bears 6-4 on August 1st. West Virginia is the Class A Short Season affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Nick Ernst retired all 6 batters he faced in relief.

Nick Ernst ’15 / Staten Island Yankees / 6 IP, 5 K

Aberdeen IronBirds beat the Staten Island Yankees 6-2 on July 22. Ernst threw 36 pitches to 10 batters and did not factor into the decision. Aberdeen is the Class A Short Season affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Aberdeen was in 1st place at the time in the New York-Penn McNamara division.

Staten Island Yankees beat the New York-Penn League Stedler division 1st place Lowell Spinners 4-1 on July 27. Nick was the starting pitcher and gave up one hit in 4 shutout innings in his best game of the season. He faced 13 batters and threw 53 pitches. Lowell is the Class A Short Season affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.

Nick Ernst ’15 / Staten Island Yankees / 2 IP, 3 K

Staten Island shutout the Oakland A’s Class A Short Season affiliate, the Vermont Lake Monsters, 7-0 in their New York-Penn League matchup on July 18. Ernst threw 20 strikes in his 24 pitch outing, allowing 1 hit in the 7 batters he faced in his continued rehab assignment.

Nick started against the Lowell Spinners on July 4th, he threw 56 pitches and faced 14 batters.. He did not get a decision in the 5-3 loss.

Nick started Friday against the Vermont Lake Monsters in the New York-Penn League game and threw 53 pitches, losing 5-2.

The Charleston RiverDogs sent Nick Ernst on a rehab assignment to the Staten Island Yankees on June 22. Nick started the 6/22 game against the Brooklyn Cyclones and threw 48 pitches over 3 innings.

Staten Island plays in the Class A Short Season of the New York-Penn League. The New York Yankees are the Parent Club of the Staten Island Yankees.

Micah Allen ’16 / Ashland University / 1 H, 1 R, 3 BB

The Ashland Eagles beat the New York Institute of Technology Bears 8-3 to advance in the NCAA Division-II World Series. Ashland (48-15) had a rematch with the Central Missouri Mules (45-15) on Wednesday, but lost 11-3 to bring their season to an end.

Tyler Wardwell ‘ 16 / Duke University

The Duke Blue Devils beat the Vanderbilt Commodores 18-5 in the first game of the Division-I Nashville Super Regional. Vanderbilt came back to win the second game 3-0 on a no-hitter by Kumar Rocker. The deciding third game in the best-of-3 series was won by Vanderbilt (52-11), 13-2, to bring Duke’s (35-26) season to an end.

Week of May 27, 2019

Joey Wenning ’15 / Heidelberg College / .2 IP

The Heidelberg Student Princes (35-15) lost to the Birmingham Southern Panthers (40-13) 6-1, and to the Babson College Beavers (39-9) 6-5 in the Division-III College World Series double-elimination tournament to bring their season to an end.

Micah Allen ’16 / Ashland University / 1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI

The Ashland Eagles (47-14) lost to Central Missouri Mules (44-14) 9-4 in the Division-II College World Series opening round.  Allen reached on a throwing error in the 4th inning to pick up an RBI, and scored in the 7th.  Ashland will play the New York Institute of Technology Bears (37-15) in an elimination game at 3:00 on Monday June 3.

Tyler Wardwell ‘ 16 / Duke University

The Duke Blue Devils beat Texas A&M Aggies 8-5, the West Virginia Mountaineers 4-0, and Texas A&M Aggies again 4-1, in the Division-I College Morgantown Regional.  Duke (33-25) advances to the Super Regional vs. the Vanderbilt Commodores (52-10), winner of the Nashville Regional.

Griffin Merritt ‘ 18 / University of Cincinnati / 1 AB

The University of Cincinnati Bearcats beat the defending National Champions Oregon St. Beavers 7-6 in the opening round of the Corvallis Regional. The Bearcats then went on to lose to Michigan 10-4, and Creighton 6-1, in the double-elimination tournament. Cincinnati finished the season 31-31.

Week of May 20, 2019

Joey Wenning ’15 / Heidelberg College / 2 IP, 1 SV, 1 K.

Heidelberg Student Princes (35-13) beat the Wooster Fighting Scots (30-15) 14-1 to advance to the Division-III College World Series for the 2nd time in program history.

Wenning pitched a scoreless ninth inning to complete the Mideast Super Regional victory.

Heidelberg's other World Series appearance was in 2010. The D-III College World Series has 2 four-team double-elimination brackets. The winners of each bracket will play in a three-game series.

Heidelberg will play the Birmingham Southern Panthers (39-13) @ Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Friday May 31, 7:45.

Jacob Kaiser ’16 / University of Charleston / 3 IP, 3 K.

The University of Charleston Golden Eagles (41-19) lost 2-of-3 games to the Mercyhurst Lakers (34-14) in the Atlantic Super Regional to bring their season to an end.

Andrew Sexton ’16 / Xavier University

The Xavier Musketeers (27-31) lost 2-of-4 games in the Big East Tournament to bring their season to an end.

Tyler Wardwell ’16 / Duke University

The Duke Blue Devils (31-25) lost to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (41-17) 5-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.

Duke will play the Texas A&M Aggies (37-21-1) in the Division-I NCAA Morgantown Regional @ Morgantown, WV, on Friday May 31, 4:00. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

Micah Allen ’17 / Ashland University / 4 H, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 3 R, 2 BB.

Ashland (47-13) beat Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars (41-17-1) 8-7 to advance to the Division-II College World Series for the 6th time in program history.

Allen hit a 2-run home run in the first inning of the Midwest Super Regional final to give Ashland a 2-1 lead.

Ashland will play the Central Missouri Mules (43-14) @ Cary, NC, on Saturday June 1, 2:00.

Griffin Merritt ’18 / University of Cincinnati / 1 H, 1 RBI.

Cincinnati (30-29) beat the University of Connecticut Huskies (36-23) 22-5 in the American Athletic Conference Tournament to advance to the NCAA Division-I Corvallis Regional.

Merritt hit an RBI-single in the 9th inning to increase the Bearcat lead to 20-4.

The Cincinnati Bearcats are making their 6th appearance in the NCAA postseason, the first since 1974. The #4 seed Bearcats will play the defending National Champions #1 seed Oregon St. Beavers (36-18-1) @ Corvallis, OR, on Friday May 31, 10pm. The game will be televised on ESPNU.


 

Week of May 13, 2019

JOEY WENNING ’15 / Heidelberg College / 3 IP, 2 SV, 1 K.

Back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2015 season, Heidelberg University defeated host Adrian College, 4-3, on Friday. Joey Wenning pitched a scoreless 9th to earn his 15th career save.

Heidelberg beat Denison 2-1 in the NCAA D-III Mideast Adrian Regional on Saturday. Joey Wenning passed Ben Thorpe for second on Heidelberg’s career saves list with his 16th career save.

Heidelberg once again beat host Adrian College, 9-6 Sunday. Joey Wenning pitched the 9th to close the game.

Heidelberg Student Princes (33-13) will face the College of Wooster Fighting Scots (30-13) in a best-of-three NCAA D-III Super-Regional next weekend at a site to be determined.  

JACOB KAISER ’16 / University of Charleston (WV) / 1 W, 3.1 IP, 4 K.

Jacob Kaiser earned his 9th win of the season in beating West Chester Golden Rams 3-1 on Friday.

The Golden Eagles beat Gannon University Golden Knights 6-1 for the Region II Championship on Saturday. Kaiser struck out the final batter of the game, caught him looking on a 1-2 count.

Charleston (40-17) earned a trip to next weekend's NCAA D-II best-of-3 Atlantic Super Regional vs. host Mercyhurst Lakers (32-13) 5/21 @ 1:00.

Game 2 @ 11:00 and game 3 (approximately 30 minutes after game 2, if necessary) will be played 5/25.

ANDREW SEXTON ’16 / Xavier University / 1 AB

The #2 seed Xavier Musketeers (25-29) play in the Big East Tournament vs. #3 seed St. Johns (30-21) at Prasco Park in Mason, OH Thursday 5/23 @ 6:30. Xavier won 2 of 3 games this season at St. Johns. Xavier won 11-8 on 4/12, lost 9-8 on 4/13, and won 8-1 on 4/14.

Big East Tournament play continues thru Sunday May 26.

MICAH ALLEN ’17 / Ashland University / 6 H, 2 R, 3 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB.

On Friday at Schoonover Stadium at Kent State University, Sophomore Micah Allen had his first sacrifice bunt of the season in their 6-5 win over Northwood.

Also on Friday, in the second game, Allen had a lead-off double and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 9th to beat Bellarmine 8-7 on a walk-off. Allen had 3 hits in the game.

The top-seeded Eagles faced Tiffin on Saturday at noon in the split Region's Championship game. Micah Allen drew a two-out bases-loaded walk to give Ashland the lead 6-5 in the 6th. Ashland won 7-6 to advance to the title game.

Ashland won the title game 15-5 over Tiffin later on Saturday.

The Eagles (42-15) advance to the NCAA D-II Midwest Super Regional on Friday May 24 at 1:00 at Donges Field vs. Illinois-Springfield (40-15-1). The best-of-3 Super Regional will be played on Friday 5/24 and Saturday 5/25 in Ashland.

GRIFFIN MERRITT ’18 / University of Cincinnati / 1 H, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 2B, 2 BB.

The #2 seed University of Cincinnati Bearcats (26-29) play the #7 seed Memphis Tigers (27-26) in the American Athletic Conference Tournament in Clearwater, FL May 5/21 @ 4:00. Cincinnati won 2 of 3 games this season at Memphis. Cincinnati won 7-4 on 5/10, lost 11-4 on 5/11, and won 4-2 on 5/12.

American Conference Tournament play continues thru Sunday May 26.


 

Week of May 6, 2019

Joey Wenning '15 / Heidelberg University / 3.1 IP, 2 K.

Wenning named honorable mention in the All-Ohio Athletic Conference. Wenning is the closer for the Heidelberg Student Princes, leading the OAC with 8 saves. The OAC co-champions earned one of 18 at-large bids into the 58-team NCAA Tournament. This is the first year that the Division III tournament will use the regional/super-regional format. Heidelberg will compete in one of 13 four-team double-elimination tournaments across the country May 16-19.

Nigel Williams '15 / Lake Erie College / 3 R, 4H, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 3 BB. 

Williams named to the second team in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. Williams hit went .333 during the regular season, with an on-base percentage of .414 and a slugging percentage of .586. The season for Lake Erie Storm ended with their 6-4 loss against Ohio Dominican University Panthers in the G-MAC quart​erfinal match-up of the conference tournament.

Micah Allen '16 / Ashland University / 3 R, 5 H, 4 RBI, 2 BB. 

Allen named honorable mention in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Allen was the Eagles' second-leading hitter with a .370 batting average. The Ashland Eagles earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional. Ashland will play against No. 8-seed Tiffin (24-29) in the opening game of the regional on Thursday (May 16) at 3:30 p.m at Schoonover Stadium at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.

The University of Charleston Golden Eagles have earned the automatic qualifying bid to the 2019 NCAA tournament for their second year in a row. The Golden Eagles will face the Gannon Golden Knights in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional on Thursday May 16 at 2:00 p.m.
