Fine Arts

Art I

The objective of Art 1 is learning and understanding the vocabulary and language of a visual fine art. Students study the elements and principles of design and composition. They create artwork with the use of different media, methods and techniques in a studio setting. Students develop the aesthetics and art criticism. Students will learn about Historical periods of art and artists.

Art II

Grade Level: 10,11,12

Credit: 1

The objective of Art 2 is to expand the knowledge of students to various art forms, vocabulary and language of art. Students learn new basic techniques of art 1. They will develop advanced techniques in studio artwork to include new techniques and Medias. Students will learn new historical and current styles and theories of art through an interrelated study of the artist. This studio course will also involve students participating in art criticism and aesthetics.

Art III

Grade Level: 11,12

Prerequisite: Teacher’s Signature

This studio art course improves developed skills and adds new skills, techniques and language of art. Students will develop improved visual appreciation and the use of hands on Media, methods and techniques to create art through studio projects. Students will begin to develop their portfolio and will learn new historical and current styles and theories of art through interrelated study of artist. This studio course will also involve students participating in art criticism and aesthetics.

Art IV

Grade Level: 12

Prerequisite: Teacher’s Signature

This studio art course is for the student who is serious about art as either a lifetime career or hobby. The first half of the course will concentrate on the preparation and completion of a portfolio of ten to twelve examples of the students work demonstrating technical skills in multiple media and various original solutions to two and three dimensional problems. The students will continue to improve developed skills and add new skills and language of art. Students will learn new historical and current styles and theories of art through an interrelated study of artist. This course will also involve students participating in art criticism and aesthetics

Choir

Grade Level: 9,10,11,12

Credit: 1

Men’s Choir is open to all students with little or no training that want to experience the joy of singing in a performing art. No experience required! Men’s choir will focus on proper singing technique to include breath support, tone production, sight-reading and phrasing. Students will perform in various concerts throughout the year. Men’s choir is a pre-requisite for Vocal Ensemble.

Vocal Ensemble

Grade Level: 10,11,12

Prerequisite: Teacher’s Signature

This yearly performance-based course is by audition only for sophomores, juniors and seniors. Students learn to sing many different genres of choral music, but mostly concentrating on 4 part Vocal Pedagogy. Students perform as a Mixed Choir, Men’s choir, Sacred Choir and in a Show Choir. Students will receive vocal training in the areas of breath control, vocal tone productions, proper singing pronunciation and articulation and sight singing. Elements of music will also be included to give students a better perspective on the music they are studying. Performances and Concerts may be held during school, in the evening and on weekends. Students will also travel over Spring break to participate in a competition or other Performance venue.

Guitar

Grade Level: 9,10,11,12

Guitar class focuses on learning how to play guitar along with other basic musical concepts - no experience is required for this class. You will learn chords, rhythm guitar playing, lead guitar playing, riffs, blues, and more. Students in this class commit to learning an instrument for an entire year.

Band

Grade Level: 9,10,11,12

Credit: 1

Band is for any student who has some previous instrumental music experience and want to continue. This class is highly recommended for Students planning on playing in the marching band as well as beginning students. All Band I students are strongly encouraged to play in marching band. Students will play in multiple concerts and complete composition assignments throughout the year.

Theatrical Arts

Grade Level: 10,11,12

Theatrical Arts is open to all students at La Salle interested in exploring the elements of Theater. The purpose of Theatrical Arts is to increase student’s understanding, appreciation and critical analysis of the theatre and theatrical events. Our study of theatre will include script analysis, character analysis, dramatic structure, production, acting, basic stage combat, improvisation, directing, design, auditions and various technical aspects of production. Students will participate in a creative team project as part of this course.

Percussion

Grade Level: 9,10,11,12

Credit: 1

Percussion is for students with little or no experience that want to experience playing drums, xylophone, marimba, exotic instruments and more. No experience required! Percussion class focuses on learning to play multiple percussion instruments as well as read music. The percussion class plays two concerts during the school year.

Music Theory

Grade Level: 10,11,12

Credit: 1

Students will gain a fundamental understanding of music theory as defined by the Ohio Music Standards (specifically those defined in HS l-8CE, HS 8PR, and HS 2-6RE) and by the categories defined below. In addition, they will also be learning the basics of music composition and music editing using programs such as Audacity and Adobe Audition. Students will be evaluated through multiple areas including homework assignments, written tests, composition projects, audio projects, sight singing, ear training, and written work. The class will meet for a full year and will fulfill a fine arts credit requirement for La Salle High School.
