Mike Popejoy '85 Tapped as Varsity Soccer Coach



The La Salle Athletic Department announced today that Head JV Soccer Coach Mike Popejoy '85 has been tapped as the next Varsity Soccer Coach.

Mike has over 24 years of soccer coaching experience including ten years collegiately between Xavier University and Mount Saint Joseph University. Previously he coached with the United States Soccer Federation as a Regional Staff Coach and State of Ohio Head Coach. Mike earned a United States Soccer Federation National "B" Coaching License.

"We found the most qualified coach in our own back yard," says Athletic Director Jim Barre. "With Mike Popejoy we have a coach who knows the skill level of our athletes and the transition should be a very smooth one."

Mike has been the La Salle JV Head Coach for two seasons. He coached at various assistant and head coaching positions for youth programs and local high schools since 1995 including Finneytown, Lakota East, Total Futbol Academy and Kings Hammer Academy. He has earned three Greater Miami Conference Coach of the Year Awards and was an OHSAA State Coach of the Year Runner Up in 1998.

"I was really excited to return to my alma mater as an Assistant Coach," says Mike. "I am honored to be offered this great opportunity to lead the Varsity Soccer program into the future."

Mike was a collegiate soccer player for two years while at Northern Kentucky University. He graduated from Mount Saint Joseph University with a dual degree in Physical and Health Education with a concentration in Sports Medicine completing his teaching license for K-12 Physical and Health Education. He continued his education with a master degree in Education from Marygrove College. He is currently a Physical Education/ Health instructor at Lakota East High School.

Mike lives in Green Township with his wife Peggy and three children: Elena, Ben '22, and Erin. They are members of Our Lady of Visitation parish.
