Afterprom:
This year's afterprom will be held
from 11 p.m-4 a.m. at Clippard Y. As
in the past, this is an opportunity
for parents to assure the safety and
the enjoyment for their kids. The
afterprom is completely dependent on
the participation of parents. All
those interested in being part of the
preparation or the actual operation
of the afterprom will meet on Monday,
February 11, at 7 p.m. in room 113.
We encourage freshman and sophomore
parents to be part of this to help
insure the continuation of this event
for your own sons when they
participate in the prom If you have
any questions, please write Bob
Sauerbrey
or call Chris Runtz at 574-5568.
Looks like a fun spring with SADD!
FYI:
This year we will be expanding the service dimension of SADD since service to others is one of the finest assurances of positive decisions in one's own life. Albert Schweitzer said in speaking to a group of young people, "I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve." Positive decisions and service are two sides of the same coin. Uniting those is the focus of SADD.
1. SADD's mission at La Salle is to educate young people about the effects of the choices they make, to help them make life-affirming and life-giving decisions, and to help create safe places where young people may enjoy their lives without the pressure to make decisions they know are destructive. All of this takes place in the affirmation of the sacredness of life on all levels and in its actions to reveal and release the true life in each other. One whose life is lived with empowerment will in itself be happy, joyous, and free and will be a source of new life for all those around such a person. We lead primarily by example rather than by preaching, hectoring, or coercion.
2. SADD meets on the first and the third Tuesdays of every month; meetings are held in room 202 and begin at 2:50. By Wednesday, the minutes of the meeting will be posted on this web page and will include opportunities to serve, to enjoy each other's company, and to contact other members of SADD at La Salle and members of SADD from other schools who have access to our web page.
3. We begin this year with planning some things we've done in the past: speakers coming in to speak to particular classes, meeting with other SADD chapters, the winter Mardis Gras scrub dance for freshmen and sophomores, the afterprom, and service opportunities.
4. We have some new things on our plate:
a. We want to explore the possibilities of student mentoring particularly with students who have had similar experiences to those of particular SADD members and with students who are having a difficult time coping with transition to high school or who have issue that might be most profitably dealt with on a peer basis.
b. Last year a number of students, working with Brian Zupan and led my Mike Reed and Matt Starkey, began working at senior homes and institutions on Saturday evening. Saturday is tough for kids and tough for institutionalized seniors. Some students just helped set up a computer system some people had received from their own kids and had not used because they'd just never done it before. When our SADD guys (often with their girlfriends) got the computer put together, set up a free mail account through hotmail or juno, and then got access to the internet through one of the free servers, they knew that some parts of invisible walls were crumbling. About 9 p.m., most guys left to get some chow and get in some good talking with friends; they found a whole day had been transformed by what they did--they were givers and not takers that day.
5. SADD is for everyone and fits with anyone's schedule. We had football players who couldn't work with us to after Thanksgiving or so, and then, like Kurt Sunderhaus, they made wonderful contributions to the community. SADD will be asking every coach and moderator to send one of their very best to represent their activity in SADD.
6. If you have any questions, see Mr. Sauerbrey in room 202 or write him at <bsauerbrey@lasallehs.net>. This should be a great year.
All are welcome at each meeting. Activity representatives should attend at least the Large Group meetings. The Core Group is for those who wish to exercise leadership roles in SADD; this is not a year-long commitment to make it possible for those involved in either fall or spring sports or other activities to be able to give more to SADD during their off season.
