About the National Honor Society
What is the National Honor Society? How does someone get to be in the National Honor Society? |
The National Honor Society is an organization established to recognize outstanding high school students who achieve and maintain high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. To be eligible to be a candidate of NHS, a high school student must first either be a sophomore, junior, or senior in high school who is in the top 20% in his class. However, it is important to add that no student is inducted simply because of academic achievement . This is only one of the four criteria for selection into LaSalle's NHS. In addition to scholarship, the student must also show excellence in leadership, character, and service. An application is given to a student if he is in the top 20% of his class. He must answer the questions on the application and then return it. Then, a team of faculty, staff, and administration vote on which members should be inducted according to the applications. Students who applied will know if they are inducted in NHS by about mid-November. Usually more seniors are chosen than juniors and more juniors than sophomores. An Induction Ceremony will be held for those who are accepted into the National Honor Society. |

What does the National Honor Society do? |
The National Honor Society is an organization whose members provide service to their school, their fellow students, and the wider community though their involvement in various clubs, teams, other activities, and through their personal behavior, NHS members are expected to provide an example of Christian character and leadership in both formal and informal ways.
NHS usually partakes in service activities, which are discussed at the monthly meetings. These activities usually vary from year to year. One activity that is done every year, however, is called the Giving Tree. The Giving Tree is a program organized by LaSalle's National Honor Society, where each NHS member is assigned a room to collect money from fellow students. The money is then used to buy Christmas gifts for underprivileged families. The gifts are delivered to the families, and any extra money is given as well. This project is organized by NHS with the help of Dorothy Trimble, who works at Free Store Food Bank, which has been serving the community for 25 years. LaSalle has been doing this project for at least 10 years. It was originally started by Mr. Reichle with Key Club. Then the National Honor Society took it over under the direction of Mr. Stewart. Since then, the program has grown considerably. Now Mr. McCullough and Mrs. Whittle are in charge. |
